What is Form 2290?
It is a tax for the use of heavy vehicles on the highways, its fiscal period is from July 1 to June 30 of the following year, and it is paid based on the weight of the vehicles that are subject to the regulation.
-
Who must file: Owners of heavy highway vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are used on public highways must file Form 2290. This typically applies to truckers and trucking companies.
-
Payment: The tax is based on the vehicle’s weight and miles driven. The more a vehicle weighs and the more it drives on public highways, the higher the tax liability. There are exemptions for certain types of vehicles, such as those that operate fewer than 5,000 miles per year (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles).
- Proof of payment: After filing Form 2290 and paying the tax, the IRS will provide a stamped Schedule 1, which serves as proof of payment. This proof is often required when registering a vehicle with the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
